Trouble sticking to those New Year's Resolutions? Try This…

No matter what your New Years resolutions are, staying fit during the winter season can be a challenge for everyone, athletes included. From recovering from holiday parties and gatherings (with lots of high-calorie food options), to more time spent indoors doing sedentary activities, winter can take a toll on your physical fitness.

With so much going on, and now that school activities and sports practices are about to start again, you may think you can't carve out time for exercise. Think again. If you get a little creative, you'll find both the motivation and time to train and keep yourself, and your athlete, in great shape.

Publicize Your Intentions

One way to make sure you stick to your fitness goals is to make them public. Even the refrigerator door counts as public! If you know others will call you out for slacking off on a workout or eating too many desserts, you're less likely to give in to the temptation in the first place. If you're on social media, make a post or video on your favorite platform stating your intentions. Your friends and followers will keep you encouraged and accountable. Plus, you may even inspire others to join you.

Do It First Thing

Morning workouts energize you for the entire day. They are also much less likely to get pushed aside for other tasks on your to-do list. Schedule in an hour or more of training before breakfast and you won't have to feel guilty about skipping your workout later in the day. Depending on the age of your athlete, some schools have later starts, have them join you for a morning run. It's a great way to bond, and you both benefit!

Plan Outdoorsy Activities

Support your physical fitness without clocking in gym time by heading outdoors. Hiking, biking, running, skating and skiing are great activities to help you burn fat. What's more, these activities can also be done with others, allowing your family and friends to participate, support you and your athlete, and get out there too.

Buddy Up

It can be tough to wake up early and hit the gym, especially for those who live in northern climates where it's freezing cold outside. However, if sliding back under the warm covers means letting down a pal, you'll think twice about flaking on your appointment. Arrange to meet a buddy at the gym or commute together so that both of you have accountability. Working out with a friend makes the time pass more quickly and adds much-needed socialization to your sweat session.

Younger athletes can buddy up too! Find a friend on the team or a neighborhood buddy. An active playdate is definitely different and fun too. Be involved, get your workout in with them! I know my son enjoys being active more when I'm active with him, so use the time to benefit you both.

Don't let daunting resolutions sabotage the fun. Be realistic. Set goals and workouts so they're reasonable and achievable. Try a few of these tricks to commit to your workouts, and always keep going!
